The things I found challenging about this busy schedule:

Getting enough sleep.

The impact on my body physically (I feel new muscles forming from adjusting so much!).

The impact on my laundry pile and general house hold chores.

Fitting in my usual grocery shopping.

Timing eating right to ensure I wasn’t teaching/sleeping/practicing on a full stomach but with enough fuel to keep me going.

Finding time for me. Just Be-ing and not do-ing.

Finding time for others (friends. family. Steve)

The things I found made this week feel easy even with this challenging schedule:

When I put my head on the pillow – I slept – I mean really SLEPT!

Knowing that I was learning so much every day – immersing myself in my dharma of teaching yoga and being around such inspiring individuals.

My friends understanding and giving me a warming smile, a hug or some friendly encouragement.

Relaxing a little on how much gets done and focusing on the quality of what does get done.

My family – for understanding and helping out with simple things like a lift to the recycling bank!

A great diet – keep it simple and light so I had excess energy to do what needed to be done. This is the opposite of what many people do – (i.e. there is a notion we must eat more to ‘get by’ which I find has the opposite effect on me!).

Smiling. Laughing. Enjoying. Being grateful. Learning…

Cancer Protection and Cholesterol Benefits

The month-long fermentation process in creating black garlic contributes to creating a kind of super-garlic. The compound S-allylcysteine, a natural component of fresh garlic and a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, was found in much greater concentrations in black garlic, and is thought to help lower cholesterol and decrease the risk of cancer, reports HealthMad.com.

Infection Protection

White garlic contains anti-microbial, antibiotic and anti-fungal agents in its active ingredient, allicin. In black garlic, S-allylcysteine assists with the absorption of allicin, helping it metabolize more easily which could offer boosted protection against infections.

Disease Protection

Garlic is also high in antioxidants. Black garlic has been found to have twice the antioxidant properties of conventional garlic. Antioxidants protect the cells from disease and are thought to slow down the aging process, according to OrganicAuthority.com. Because black garlic is so potent, the heightened levels of antioxidants offering protection from free radical damage make it an ideal food for thwarting chronic disease. Free radicals damage cells leading to heart disease, Alzheimer’s, circulatory problems, rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic diseases.

Other Characteristics

The fermentation that produces black garlic reduces the pungent odor and strong flavor, making it more palatable and appealing to some people. The taste of black garlic has been compared to that of a dried fruit, smoky, sweet and slightly chewy, according to the Antioxidants-guide.com. Conventional garlic, even in freeze-dried capsules, emits a strong garlic odor that permeates the skin, causing objectionable body and breath odor in people using garlic as a health supplement, explains CandidaAlbicansCure.com. Black garlic has none of the strong odor of white garlic and can be consumed in large quantities without the olfactory effects.

This time last year I was living and ‘working’ (shhhhhh!) in a little town called Patagonia in Arizona USA.
I was teaching one yoga class per week and the rest of the time sitting at a desk job I didn’t enjoy….
Basically doing something I had told myself (and others) I would ever do (work a job I didn’t like).
There were many little things about this time in my life that left me feeling less than whole.
That which is not whole: simply is not yoga.

The past few weeks practicing Ashtanga yoga with Jill truly set my telescope back on the target.
I chugged away through primary and second series under her special teaching guidance for 6 weeks.
I had the time and the energy to go deeper.
Now, teaching 20+ classes per week I have less time to practice asana.
I am focusing on 2nd series and whatever comes up…
Early this week I felt something lift physically, right inside my pelvis.
I have had something that feels like a tummy ache for the days proceeding along with some new hip/psoas stuff .
Yesterdays practice around Eka Pada Sirsasana turned into me reclining on the floor in many strange shapes with my legs and hips in positions I’ve never seen before.
I was on a mighty exploration into my hips.
It felt indulgent to stray from ‘the sequence’ but so effective to lie and listen to what had risen and in the quiet of my private yoga practice I was able to listen.
… and today? I feel SO different. I am not yet able to verbalize what happened. All I know is that this yoga stuff works. Ashtanga Yoga works for me.
It has brought to the surface stuff that would have otherwise been left to fester – it gives me no choice but to look at the things I don’t even know are there.
All those days at the desk in AZ feeling less than whole, might just have crept up on me.
I am watching this process right now and responding with nurturing patient breaths.
Am I now getting the time to let it go?
In the 1.5 hours of quiet I get each day – (*gratitude*) – the dramatic difference in noise, stimulus and responsibility compared to the rest of my day – maybe that is what this is for?
Look out for those see-saws!
The ups, the downs, the highs, the lows – this life sure is an adventure and from each perspective on the see-saw of life there is something to learn, something to make you more conscious, something to take you closer to wholeness.

The Indian Subcontinent rosary or set of mantra counting has 108 beads.

108 has been a sacred number in the Indian Subcontinent for a very long time.

This number is explained in many different ways:

The ancient Indians were excellent mathematicians and 108 may be the product of a precise mathematical operation (e.g. 1 power 1 x 2 power 2 x 3 power 3 = 108) which was thought to have special numerological significance.

Powers of 1, 2, and 3 in math: 1 to 1st power=1; 2 to 2nd power=4 (2×2); 3 to 3rd power=27 (3x3x3). 1X4x27=108

Sanskrit alphabet: There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti. 54 times 2 is 108.

Sri Yantra: On the Sri Yantra there are marmas where three lines intersect, and there are 54 such intersections. Each intersections has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti qualities. 54 x 2 equals 108. Thus, there are 108 points that define the Sri Yantra as well as the human body.

9 times 12: Both of these numbers have been said to have spiritual significance in many traditions. 9 times 12 is 108. Also, 1 plus 8 equals 9. That 9 times 12 equals 108.

Heart Chakra: The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. One of them, sushumna leads to the crown chakra, and is said to be the path to Self-realization.

Marmas: Marmas or marmastanas are like energy intersections called chakras, except have fewer energy lines converging to form them. There are said to be 108 marmas in the subtle body.

Time: Some say there are 108 feelings, with 36 related to the past, 36 related to the present, and 36 related to the future.

Astrology: There are 12 constellations, and 9 arc segments called namshas or chandrakalas. 9 times 12 equals 108. Chandra is moon, and kalas are the divisions within a whole.
Planets and Houses: In astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets. 12 times 9 equals 108.

Gopis of Krishna: In the Krishna tradition, there were said to be 108 gopis or maid servants of Krishna.
1, 0, and 8: 1 stands for God or higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness or completeness in spiritual practice, and 8 stands for infinity or eternity.

Sun and Earth: The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.

Numerical scale: The 1 of 108, and the 8 of 108, when added together equals 9, which is the number of the numerical scale, i.e. 1, 2, 3 … 10, etc., where 0 is not a number.

Smaller divisions: The number 108 is divided, such as in half, third, quarter, or twelfth, so that some malas have 54, 36, 27, or 9 beads.

Islam: The number 108 is used in Islam to refer to God.

Jain: In the Jain religion, 108 are the combined virtues of five categories of holy ones, including 12, 8, 36, 25, and 27 virtues respectively.

Sikh: The Sikh tradition has a mala of 108 knots tied in a string of wool, rather than beads.

Chinese: The Chinese Buddhists and Taoists use a 108 bead mala, which is called su-chu, and has three dividing beads, so the mala is divided into three parts of 36 each.

Stages of the soul: Said that Atman, the human soul or center goes through 108 stages on the journey.

Meru: This is a larger bead, not part of the 108. It is not tied in the sequence of the other beads. It is the quiding bead, the one that marks the beginning and end of the mala.

Dance: There are 108 forms of dance in the Indian traditions.

Pythagorean: The nine is the limit of all numbers, all others existing and coming from the same. ie: 0 to 9 is all one needs to make up an infinite amount of numbers.

Listed below are 108 Upanishads as per the list contained in the Muktikopanishad . They are arranged in four categories according to the particular Veda to which each of them belong.
Rigveda(10): Aitareya , Atmabodha, Kaushitaki, Mudgala, Nirvana, Nadabindu, Akshamaya, Tripura, Bahvruka, Saubhagyalakshmi.
Yajurveda(50): Katha, Taittiriya , Isavasya , Brihadaranyaka, Akshi, Ekakshara, Garbha, Prnagnihotra, Svetasvatara, Sariraka, Sukarahasya, Skanda, Sarvasara, Adhyatma, Niralamba, Paingala, Mantrika, Muktika, Subala, Avadhuta, Katharudra, Brahma, Jabala, Turiyatita, Paramahamsa, Bhikshuka, Yajnavalkya, Satyayani, Amrtanada, Amrtabindu, Kshurika, Tejobindu, Dhyanabindu, Brahmavidya, YogakundalinI, Yogatattva, Yogasikha, Varaha, Advayataraka, Trisikhibrahmana, mandalabrahmana, Hamsa, Kalisantaraaa, Narayana, Tarasara, Kalagnirudra, Dakshinamurti, Pancabrahma, Rudrahrdaya, SarasvatIrahasya.
SamaVeda(16): Kena, Chandogya, Mahat, Maitrayani, Vajrasuci, Savitri, Aruneya, Kundika, Maitreyi, Samnyasa, Jabaladarsana, Yogacudaman, Avyakta, Vasudevai, Jabali, Rudrakshajabala.
Atharvaveda(32): Prasna , Mandukya, Mundaka, Atma, Surya, Narada-Parivrajakas, Parabrahma, Paramahamsa-Parivrajakas, Pasupatha-Brahma, Mahavakya, Sandilya, Krishna, Garuda, Gopalatapani, Tripadavibhuti-mahnarayana, Dattatreya, Kaivalya, NrsimhatapanI, Ramatapani, Ramarahasya, HayagrIva, Atharvasikha, Atharvasira, Ganapati, Brhajjabala, Bhasmajabala, Sarabha, Annapurna, TripuratapanI, Devi, Bhavana, SIta.

All measuring systems are merely reference frames. They give us a starting point. It doesn’t really matter if you call them farenheits or cycles. All science is based on fundamental assumptions of the mechanics of this universe. Yet, these assumptions, if correct, connect like building blocks.
Much in the same way, the number ‘108’ is just a reference frame. It is symbolic of a bigger picture: that of humility. When devotees recite 108 Hanuman Chalisas, in their minds they believe, they are proving their love for God, and that there is in fact a need to prove their love. When devotees assign a 108 names to Shri Ganesh, they are once again gauging their devotion through numbers. This, of course, may be considered unreasonable, since it suggests that 108 chants are more effective than 109 chants. How do they know this? Have they proved it? Is 108 the magic number of the universe? No, it is not! It is a reference frame. What is important is that a system is imposed to guide us through the fundamental struggles encountered in any evolutional process. Otherwise, chaos and anarchy follow and nothing gets done.
Having said that, I will show you justifications from a few subcultures in India. Obviously, I consider the Vedic rationale to be the most consistent with the fundamental laws of this universe. The others have borrowed and built, but it still smells of Vedic beginnings.
In present times, we can find many rationales for the proliferation of ‘108’ throughout our scriptures. In fact, this number seems to garner its unfair share of attention from myriad cults and faith systems around the world….

JYOTISH SHASTRA {VEDIC SYSTEM}
This universe was created by the five elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. From these elements came the three attributes: Raj {birth}, Sat {protection} and Tam {destruction or death.}
The mathematical or geographical evidence proves that one circle has 360 degrees in space. Why is this circle or wheel of life considered to be of 360 degrees only? If we take a circle and start dividing it using the four elements and three attributes, all the logic can be observed.
The circle itself, is considered the first element of space, since we must consume space in drawing a circle. In this space {or circle}, the four remaining elements and three attributes create the idea of time. The circle is divisible by the product of four elements multiplied by three attributes. This involves the belief that the three attributes exist in the circle. By moving three times, each element completes its revolution.
So now we have the number 12 {3 x 4}. This division gave birth to our 12 months, and also to the 12 horas {1/2 of the day or Ahoratri}. We now have 360 degrees as well as 12 divisions. We can now further divide the wheel of time: there are 27 fixed stars (nakshatras) along with three attributes that divide the time in smaller portions. So this 27 + 3 = 30 is interpreted as 30 degrees or days of one part of the wheel (circle) or month. All of this is only half of a day. The night is yet unaccounted for. Therefore, we multiply these 30 degrees by 2. This gives us our reference of 60 seconds in a minute.
Thus the 360º x 30º = 10,800. Zero {0} is considered ‘Purna’ or complete. So we take out the last zeros and are left with 108. The idea of our total universe is represented by this number of 108. Offering 108, devotees believe that they are showing ultimate or complete respect to the Supreme.
There are many other justifications but all can be traced back to this system. A few are explained below:

SHOSHU BUDDHIST:
Followers use 108 beads in their malas. They implement the following formula:
6 x 3 x 2 x3 = 108
6 senses [sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, thought]
3 aspects of time [past, present, future]
2 condition of heart [pure or impure]
3 possibilties of sentiment [like, dislike, indifference]

BUDDHA’S FOOTPRINT:
All Buddhists accept the Buddha Footprint with its 108 Auspicious Illustrations. These areas are considered to have been marked on the Buddha’s left foot when his body was discovered.

BUDDHISM
: 108 beads on the Hindu maalaa {rosary}
108 Arhats or Holy Ones

HINDUISM
: 108 Gopis {consorts} of Lord Krishna
108 Holy places for Vaishnavas
108 beads on the Japa maalaa {rosary}
108 Upanishads
108 Divyadeshes – Divine or Sacred Tirtha throughout India and Nepal
108 sacred water taps in Muktinath – Nepal

TANTRA SHASTRA
: 108 Pitha {Sacred Places}
The story goes that Lord Shiva was in deep and incessant meditation. His asceticism was creating great heat in the universe. All existence was in peril and Lord Brahma was deeply concerned. Lord Brahma asked the Mother of the Universe, Maa Shakti, to use Her strength and wile to seduce Lord Shiva. Maa Shakti agreed and was born as Sati, daughter of Shri Daksha. Lord Shiva was so entranced by Sati’s asceticism and extraordinary beauty that he took human form and they were married. Years later, at a feast, Sati’s father insulted Lord Shiva. Sati was so humiliated that she began a deep meditation which led to her immolation. Lord Shiva was completely heart broken. He reached into the sacrificial fire and pulled out as much of His beloved’s body as he could grab. As He ascended to heaven, bits of Sati’s body fell to earth. 108 bits to be precise! In time, these places were acknowledged and worshipped.

SANATANA DHARMA:
In a book by Khurana, the explanation closely mirrors the original Vedic justifications:
A circle has 360 degrees, which when multiplied by 60 gives us 21,600 minutes in a circle. 60 comes from the 60 ‘ghatis’ which Sanatana Dharmiks believe in. One ghati is equal to 24 minutes and 60 ghatis come to 24 hours.
One ghati is divided into 60 parts or ‘palas’.
So the 60 ghatis multiplied by 60 palasa comes to 3,600.
This is further multiplied by 60 (becase a pala contains 60 vipalas) which gives us 21,600.
Half of this is for the day, and the other half for the night. So, 21,600
divided by 2 gives us 10,800. For practical purposes, we use 108. Using the
number 108 helps us coordinate the rhythm of time and space & we remain in harmony with the spiritual powers of nature.

For now, I wave good bye to an invaluable new friend and inspirational star who has been in my life these past 6 weeks.

I recently got these questions in an email from a friend and they said it was okay to share with you…

How do you do the kidney cleanse that you mentioned is recommended
before doing a liver cleanse? I think that when I was ill recently it
was to do with my kidneys, though I'm not certain. I ached quite a
bit, but in particular was my lower back. I felt very thirsty and
didn't want to eat, the thought made me feel sick, my temperature
regulation went haywire and it felt unusually amazing to stretch my
lower back.
The lower back pain had started slightly when I was at my dad's at
Christmas eating meat and drinking, both of which I rarely do. Then
back in Edinburgh I had half a bottle of beer and the next day my
lower back was really uncomfortable. I drank lots of cranberry juice,
cider vinegar and ate garlic, I slept lots and each night I lay my
lower back on a hot water bottle and I got better quite fast. Does
this sound like a mild kidney infection?

Just in case you didn't know what they look like or where they are, the kidneys are the big red blobs, the adrenal glands are the yellow areas sitting on top, the yellow tubes are heading to your bladder.

Here’s what I said in response…
(NB. I am not a Dr. nor do I pretend to be!)

KIDNEYS:

Sounds to me like you were experiencing some kind of detox symptom from what you ate/drank and had to deal with over Xmas but there is no way I could ever know for sure. Pain/aches in the lower back area says to me you are lacking support – this could mean your physical daily ‘energy’, ‘chi’, ‘life-force’ (whatever you call it) is low OR you are lacking support in life in general. You were thirsty because you need to drink more water/herbal tea/juice (i.e. HYDRATE) that is what the kidneys need to clean out. Your adrenals sit above the kidneys. If you are burned out (constant squeezing of the adrenals) you are clearly needing more of that ‘support’ (in whatever way you translate it’) So – take rest, do less and remember your body is designed to heal…

It is so easy to cleanse the kidneys but a lot of the time it is made to be complicated by many ‘health gurus’.

Here is what I would do:

Take a weekend or if you have it 3/4 days of ‘down time’

Cleanse the colon (enema/colonic)

Drink as much juice as you can (not too much sugary juice – edge towards greens and less fruits and sweet roots)

Drink lots of water and teas (dandelion tea & nettle tea are the best and most affordable for kidneys)

Avoid solid food if you can – allow for lots of elimination – you’re also going to be pee-ing a lot!

REST A LOT – DO NOT DO THIS WHILE TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH YOUR BUSY LIFE (get you boyfriend/friends on your side for support)

Stay warm, eat less, sleep as much as you need to

Avoid excessive stimulation (TV, computers, stress, annoying people)

REST MORE and the MORE AGAIN!

Think positive thoughts = Feel awesome

Looking forward to more of your questions soon!
Stay well, stay happy

‘February’s Food’ – Tuesday 6th February
(scroll to the bottom to hear more about my day)

Today was full moon – no yoga this morning and a long lie in – I had a colonic scheduled for today (full and new moon are great times for detoxing) so I modified my diet to suit the circumstances – less heavy solids, more juice and lots of water.
Yesterday I ate simply but nothing outrageously different to any other day.

8:30am -
1 litre of warm water with lemon (skin and all juiced in the Omega 8006)
1 small cup of white tea
3 teaspoons of raw honey

10am -
1 teaspoon of wheatgrass juice powder mixed in water (equivalent of 1 shot of wheatgrass = 1 kilo of veggies!)
1 litre of JUICE (1 large cucumber, 2 apples, 1 large bag of spinach, 1 large chunk of Turmeric Root)
50 chlorella tablets (I just got paid so can now introduce some more of my trusty algaes and super-foods – this is where I really start to feel super good -chlorella tablets also taste like little peanuts! Please read more down below…)
4 Dessert Spoons of Bee Pollen

1pm -
More JUICE… Beetroot, carrot and apple

3pm -
1 liter coconut water (needs must – I don’t like to drink the stuff in a carton but what else is a thirsty wee yogi going to drink? Here’s where I really miss Costa Rica and all her wonderful local fresh produce)

Between 6-9pm -
Water and herbal teas about 1 liter

Later after teaching around 9:30pm -
4 tablespoons of dried bee pollen
1 litre of JUICE (1/2 cucumber, 1 apple, 1 large bag of spinach)

There's up to 5 feet of large intestine (colon) alone - that's a lot of space for the stuff you don't want to build up, to hang around. Especially in all those bends and twists!

Interesting notes from the day –

I feel good after my colonic. I always leave feeling clearer in my mind, quieter in my thoughts and more balanced and positive.
The colon is like your second brain.
Naturally, if the colon is blocked, crowded and heavy as will be your mind and judgement.

I had good feedback on my health from the therapist but was surprised to hear I am a little dehydrated!
On that note… I do miss my fresh bee pollen and fresh fruits and I guess this is why I am a little dehydrated – too much dried stuff and not enough fluids – sometimes I don’t drink if I can’t get the best quality (i.e. coconut water).
hmm… time to re-strategize.

I have been working extra hard these past few months and I am glad to say finally my life is coming back into more of a balance in terms of my finances at least.
With that, I am hoping I can start to get back to my old ways of fresh bee pollen, algaes and wheatgrass. Having said that, I feel pretty pleased with managing to stay so balanced and nourished through a long tough winter in Scotland with little variety in terms of food and on a very low income!

I have had my fair share of colonics so I go about this in my own way, that works for me.
Please be sure to seek advice before you go ahead and do it.
One of the first things to consider is how you are going to prepare – i.e. eat light and be kind to your body.
I wouldn’t recommend having a colonic for the first time without any support (i.e. a friend who has done it before or on line support network for afterwards).
I also don’t recommend going right to work afterwards!
Take some time off to rest and reflect.
Be sure to ‘chase up’ your cleansing experience with lots of water and rest.

CHLORELLA INFO – taken from
www.earthrise-foods.co.uk

Chlorella is a detoxification aid for heavy metals and other pesticides. Numerous research projects in the US and Europe indicate that chlorella can help the body to break down persistent hydrocarbon and metallic toxins such as mercury, cadmium and lead, DDT and PCB, while at the same time strengthening the immune system response. Chlorella is comprised of a fibrous outer shell (20%) and its inner nutrients (80%). It is the fibrous material which has been proven to actually bind with the heavy metals and pesticides – such as PCBs – which can accumulate in our bodies.

A healthy bloodstream, with an abundance of red blood cells to carry oxygen, is necessary for a strong natural defense system. Chlorella’s cleansing action on the bowel and other elimination channels, as well as its protection of the liver, helps keep the blood clean. Clean blood insures that metabolic wastes are efficiently carried away from the tissues.

Chlorella gets its name from the high amount of chlorophyl it possesses. Chlorella contains more chlorophyl per gram than any other plant. Chlorophyl is one of the greatest food substances for cleansing the bowel and other elimination systems, such as the liver and the blood.

Haemoglobin is the protein in our red blood cells which binds with oxygen and gives blood its bright red color. Chlorophyll cells are nearly identical to haemoglobin, with one exception: Chlorophyll has a magnesium molecule at its centre while haemoglobin has an iron molecule at the centre of it. This is important because magnesium is essential for the heart to function properly. Every time our heart beats, it is utilizing magnesium to do so.

Interferon, produced naturally by the body, is one of the greatest natural defenses against cancer. Chlorella stimulates the activity of macrophages and T-cells by increasing interferon levels, thus enhancing the immune system’s ability to combat foreign invaders whether they are viruses, bacteria, chemicals or foreign proteins.

Many diseases can only thrive in an acidic environment, thus the vital importance of helping the body to maintain an alkaline/neutral pH of 7.2-7.4. Whole foods like Chlorella and Spirulina can help with this.

Chlorella also helps to normalize blood sugar in cases of hypoglycaemia, where blood sugar is too low. Proper levels of blood sugar are necessary for normal brain function, heart function and energy metabolism, all of which are crucial in sustaining good health and preventing disease.

High blood pressure is one of the major risk factors in heart attack and stroke, which account for more fatalities in the Western world than any other disease. Laboratory experiments have shown that regular use ofChlorella reduces high blood pressure and prevents strokes in rats.

Today’s practice was all about dristi.
After chanting and chit chat with Jill Manning yesterday I thought about making tomorrows practice solely about that.
I decided, it didn’t matter what the asana looked like or even if I was breathing or not I would look where the taught method tells you to look.
No matter what.
Oh my – is it hard to keep your eye on the point.
Literally – you see the metaphor here I am sure.
That said, I had a great practice and it all felt quite different to other days.
I remain convinced that what you pay attention to, you will become conscious of.
Where you look your energy flows and that’s where you will end up in life.
Perhaps the nose gazing in an upward dog is to stop us from going through the roof.
To keep us on the ground so we can expand from there with strong roots and a trusty foundation.
Where are YOU looking?
