What is Yoga?

SPACE

I teach traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and Vinyasa Flow Yoga, however, no matter what you call it, Yoga means ‘Union’; to ‘unite’ mind, body and spirit. In the physical practice of yoga we use physical postures and movements to strengthen, tone and detoxify the physical body while focusing on the breath. Over time and with repetition this powerful practice, will help you to find the union and inner peace we call ‘yoga’.

Ashtanga Yoga
Powerful and dynamic on many levels. This style of yoga was developed by the late Sri K Pattabhi Jois, in which a set series of postures are linked dynamically to the breath in a flow of movement. This will increase your strength and flexibility. When the set sequence of postures becomes familiar, the mind relaxes and the practice can become deep and meditative, yet still dynamic.

Ashtanga Yoga Mysore style
Ashtanga Yoga taught in a self-practice format. The student learns the system, a series of coordinated postures and movement threaded together with a specific yogic breathing technique, at his/her own pace. The practice is modified appropriately for each individual to accommodate all levels, all ages, all types. The only requirement is a willingness to learn!

‘Vinyasa Yoga’ or ‘Prana Flow Yoga’
SPACE

Susan has spent time studying the teachings of Shiva Rea which shines through in her Vinyasa flow classes. In this vigorous yoga practice we build strength internally as well as externally. We cultivate concentration, confidence, and endurance. These sessions combine the fluidity of Ashtanga yoga with a varied sequence of postures strung upon the necklace of breath. Classes are ritual journeys that respond to the changing needs of urban life; hence, no class is ever the same! This allows you to practice postures and techniques that often get forgotten or become stagnant when we are used to practicing a set sequence. The class is suitable for anyone with some experience of Ashtanga and/or Dynamic Hatha & Vinyasa yoga.
Vinyasa means to link movement or action with breath. Prana means ‘energy’ or ‘life-force’. Hence, when we link movement with breath, our bodies become free of blockages, tightness and pain. With practice and patience the body will respond and we will move with fluidity and strength. You are strong, you are flexible, your body knows how. Yoga will guide you there.

More about yoga…

Every single thing we do is part of a cycle or wave within our lives. Be it washing the dishes, brushing our teeth or even dancing to our favourite piece of music.

Notice that when you become stressed or anxious the first thing to vanish is the natural flow of the breath;

Yoga practice teaches us that life is a series of unique and wonderful experiences which can be strung apon a necklace of breath.

When we treat every part of our day with this in mind, without allowing our string of breath to ware thin or even brake, life will become fluid and easy.

We will remain relaxed and are no longer a victim.

Yoga with wee yogi – Take a step inside yourself

“Yoga is not simply about physical postures, bending you this way and that, it is a way of life, a connection to your inner being. The physical aspect of yoga is a conductor for this, allowing you to shed the limitations attached to your physical body in a simple progression, step by step.

The yoga classes I teach can be seen as your daily detox. I encourage living yoga both on and off the mat. These ancient techniques were used for milenia by many yogis and non-yogis before us; they were known to work.

Daily living is becoming more and more toxic and we have lost sight of taking responsibility for our health and well being. There is an even greater need to detox the physical body than ever before. The ancient sages and yogis must have seen us coming!

I give thanks to those who have practiced before us, passing on authentic techniques, so simple yet so effective in helping us find health again. From here we can reach the point where we no longer need to build up to that dreaded yearly detox. We will become stronger and healthier than ever before. We will reach our fullest potential!”
